The RUTF Solution Peanut-based Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) is an energy-dense lipid paste very similar to commercial peanut butter, but with added vitamins and minerals, powdered milk, vegetable oil, and sugar. It has been used successfully in home-based care as the singular therapeutic food for severely malnourished children with a 90% recovery rate. It is produced locally for the children of sub-Saharan Africa and is also available commercially from Nutriset in Malaunay, France. It can be stored, unrefrigerated, for months without spoiling.
In 2007, UNICEF, the United Nations Systems Standing Committee on Nutrition, the World Health Organization and the World Food Programme issued a joint statement endorsing RUTF as the standard of treatment for severely malnourished children worldwide. It is estimated that nearly 200,000 children were treated with RUTF last year. |

Project Peanut Butter is growing. Our factory now produces enough food to feed two-thirds of severely malnourished toddlers in Malawi, and we are starting production in Sierra Leone, the country with the world's highest child mortality rate.
